Obituary

Vernetta Marie Roberson Clark, 68, was called to take her rest on January 8, 2024, at Carillion Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, VA. Vernetta, known for her sense of humor and infectious smile, always spread joy to others in spite of her pain. She prided herself in being "a domestic goddess", as she called it, and wanted nothing more than to be a good wife, mother, and grandmother and she excelled at all of these.

Vernetta was born on August 29, 1955, to M. Marie Andrews and the late Thomas H. Roberson, Sr. Her childhood, in Amherst County, VA, was filled with many happy memories made with her brother and cousins around the family's farm where she raised by her mother and stepfather, the late William E. Andrews, along with the strong influences of her great-grandfather, the late Sam Ozed White.

Vernetta attended Amherst County Schools through the 11th grade; but graduated from E.C. Glass High School due to the family moving to Lynchburg before her Senior year. The friendships she formed in school remained some of her closest throughout all her life. After graduation, she attended business school for a short time and then moved to Washington, DC, where she lived with her aunt, and worked with children. Upon returning to Lynchburg, Vernetta worked at Imperial Reading Garment Factory until she was injured on the job and could no longer maintain employment.

Vernetta married her high school sweetheart and only love, the late Marvin W. Clark, Jr. They were married 40 years and stuck together through all the ups and downs that life presented them. No matter what, their love seemed to always win.

She was an active member in her church, Lynchburg Seventh-Day Adventist Church, until her illnesses did not allow. She originally gave her life to Christ as a member of Lovingston Baptist Church in Madison Heights, VA, in her childhood. As an adult, she recommitted her life to Christ upon joining Smyrna SDA Church where she served as a Sabbath School teacher to many children and actively participated in serving through singing and sharing children's stories.

Vernetta is survived by her mother, M. Marie Andrews; daughter, Marnetta Clark; and stepdaughter, Shaneisha Smith; grandson, Donte' M. W. Clark; granddaughters, Nadia Smith and Samantha Darling; as well as her children and grandchildren "adopted in love", James Butcher, Steven and Stephon Smith, Angela Adams, Desmond Monroe, and Donovan Monroe; her siblings, Thomas H. Roberson, Jr. (Anita) and Sherri L. Andrews; also surviving are her aunts, uncles, many cousins, other relatives, and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 14, 2024, at Lynchburg Seventh Day Adventist Church, 19 George Street, Lynchburg, VA. Service of comfort rendered by Davis-Turner Funeral Service.
