IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Thomas L.
"Sonny" Nowlin
September 1, 1942 – August 31, 2025
Thomas L. (Sonny) Nowlin, a proud Marine and a Purple Heart recipient, passed away on August 31, 2025. He was born to the late John Smith and Christine Howard. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Beunice Nowlin, and great-grandson, Rayne Ross.
Thomas joined Mt. Peeler Baptist Church at an early age.
Thomas graduated from Campbell County High School (where he was known as the Best Actor and Biggest Flirt). He served his country as a United States Marine, he displayed courage, discipline, and sacrifice, earning the Purple Heart for his service. After coming home, Thomas worked and lived as he wanted to. He was a member of the singing group the Night Owls, where he played the trumpet. He loved playing his trumpet. He also loved working in his gardens. Everyone in the community couldn't wait to pick Greens, and he also delivered wood to those in need. Thomas took over the role of being the Mayor of Pettigrew Drive; after the passing of his wife, he kept up with everyone's comings and goings.
Thomas leaves to cherish the wonderful memories two sons, Carl Nowlin and Andrea; stepson, Haywood Canada, Jr.; two daughters, Claudia Nowlin and Renita Broggin (Richard); brother-in-law, Reverend Allan Loving; sister-in-law, Angie Loving; grandchildren, Bianca Nowlin, Samantha Nowlin, Marcus Nowlin, Raymond Ross (Chelcie), Alayna Canada; and Alexis Canada; great-grandchildren, Jeremiah Ross, Rhylan Ross, Rayden Ross, and Calani Ross; niece, Maria Loving; and several other relatives and friends.
