Obituary

Sylvester D. Watkins, a long-standing and devoted servant of the Lord, was called home to eternity on the evening of February 05, 2021. He was born on April 24, 1932 to the late Louis and Willie Louise Daye Watkins. He attended Carver Price High School in Appomattox, VA and graduated in 1952. At an early age, he joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church where he enjoyed singing in the choir, attending Bible study, and playing the Harmonica on occasion. He was a proud U.S. Army Korean War Veteran and Retired from Babcock & Wilcox (BWXT) after over 30 years of service.

He was united in holy matrimony to Virginia Mary Watkins with whom he would share his life for more than 56 years. This union was blessed with two children, Sylvester, Jr. and Susan.

Sylvester was an extraordinary craftsman who expertly built his own house along with many other smaller construction projects. He spent countless hours in his garage crafting and creating his next endeavor. Every year, he thoroughly enjoyed working in his garden and harvesting crop. He had a love for tractors and restoring vintage items back to their former glory.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Patterson Watkins; three brothers, James Watkins (Margaret (deceased)), Nathan Watkins (Velma), and Charles Watkins (Mamie).

His memory will be cherished by his son, Sylvester D. Watkins, Jr. (Ann) and daughter, Susan Thornton (Sam); three grandchildren, Jasmin Pittman (Nick), Jessica Thornton and Mariah Watkins; one great-grandchild, Evelyn; two brothers, Warren Watkins (Daisy) and Harry Watkins (Martha); and a host of nieces, nephews, a loving church family, caring neighbors and numerous devoted friends.

A graveside service will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, February 14, 2021 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with Rev. Donald Foster, Eulogist. Mr. Watkins will be on view Friday, February 12, 2021 from 10AM-6PM. COVID precautions will be in place. Please wear a mask. Service of comfort rendered by Davis-Turner Funeral Service.
