Obituary

Mr. Stanley W. Byrd, Jr., "Punch", 75 (always claimed to be 80), of Lynchburg, slipped into eternal peace on Monday, May 27, 2024, at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was born on December 18, 1948 to the late Stanley Byrd, Sr. and Frances L. Byrd. In addition to his family, he was raised by his grandmother, the late Berda Lue Jennings. He was also preceded in death by one devoted cousin, who he considered a brother, Curtis White.

Byrd was affectionately known by his family and friends as "Punch". "Punch" was educated in the Lynchburg Public Schools where he attended Dunbar High School. He was active in all of Dunbar's activities and reunions. Punch was already making plans for Dunbar's event in August. Punch was a diehard fan of the Washington Commanders. He dedicated his life to Christ at an early age at Rivermont Baptist Church. He was employed at St. Elizabeth Hospital for fifteen years and was employed at the Veteran's Hospital and Virginia Baptist Hospital as a CNA. During his career he served our country in the United States Air Force for 4 years.

Byrd was a respectable man who believed in Golden Rules. He treated others as he would want to be treated. If Byrd could do anything to help you he would. Byrd was the type of person who loved fun, music, and jokes. Byrd will be remembered for his sense of humor and no filter…he would tell you what was on his mind. Punch was loyal, loving, a best friend, a good father to his daughter, Yolanda Dante Byrd, and of course a God-fearing man. Byrd will truly be missed by his family and friends.

Punch is survived by two daughters, Yolanda Dante Byrd and Jackie Carr; one son, Phil Carr; former wife, Mary Byrd; grandson, Jhouldan Carr; a very devoted and special friend, Melissa Woolfolk; friends, Vincent Woolfolk, Phillip Woolfolk, William Wells, Jr.; a best friend that he considered a brother, Clarence Thomas ("Mug"); very loving and devoted cousins, Gary Carpenter, "Sam", and Michael White. He was always surrounded by cousins, loved ones, friends, and family. He truly loved his cousins, Phyllis Carpenter, Eva Moorman, Tony White, and Richard White, and nieces and nephews.
