Obituary

On Friday, December 8, 2023, the tender voice of the Lord summoned the soul of His beloved child, Sidney Jim Harmon, Jr., to eternal rest as he departed this life at his residence. Affectionately known as "Junabug" by his close family and friends, Sidney was born on October 24, 1944, in Lynchburg, VA, to Deacon Sidney Jim Harmon, Sr., and Mrs. Hester Farmer Harmon.

Sidney was preceded in death by his mother; father; wife, Vivian Harmon; stepmother, Jerean M. Harmon; brothers, Elder Fletcher Hubbard, Sr.; James J. Harmon, Sr., and Mike E. Harmon; and sister, Juanita Poindexter.

He leaves a rich legacy through his four children: Leticia V. Penn, Sidney Harmon, III (Danise), Terence Harmon (Pamela), and Troy Harmon; his former wife, Gloria Harmon; 10 grandchildren: Taneshia Gray (Garrett), Tekeya Penn, Tiarra Penn, Teanna Penn, Tamia Penn, Teja Penn, Quincy Harmon, Malcolm Harmon, Daricka Jones, and Brian Anderson; 8 great-grandchildren, Elijah Hunt, Jaylen Hunt, Josiah Baker, Tristen Longershore, Madison Jackson, Haizell Gray, Delilah Gray, and Alillia Gray; siblings paying tribute to his life, Elnora Williams, Margaret Saunders (Herman), Hester Bruce, Reverend Dr. Garrett Harmon (Eva), Julia Jones (Terrence), Oscar Harmon (Sabrina), and Sharon Allen (Lawrence).

Sidney is warmly remembered by his close companion, Frances Hawkins, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Sidney dearly loved Maya Elliott, Tiffany Smith, and Dana Whitted as daughters who extended the members of his family.

He completed his education in the Lynchburg City Public School System, graduating from Dunbar High School in 1963. He loved football and showcased his talent on the Dunbar High School football team awarding him a letterman's jacket. In high school he forged a bond with Samuel Reeves (known as "Chicken") and Stanley Crews which lasted a lifetime. He, Stanley, and Chicken relished the time they spent cruising the parkway in Sidney's GTO and racing their cars. They remained unwavering friends until this day.

After graduation, Sidney began his career working at General Electric, where he worked for several years before finding work at the Lynchburg Foundry where he was employed for 23 years. He later began driving a school bus for Lynchburg City Schools where he loved helping and supporting the kids.

He embraced entrepreneurship, as a home improvement contractor. Initially partnering with his father, Sidney Harmon, Sr., in the family home construction and repair business, Sidney eventually branched out to start his own independent venture, "Harmon Home Improvement." Sidney demonstrated a solid commitment to community service throughout these years, channeling his skills and efforts into various home projects. His work extended beyond mere professional pursuits; he actively engaged with those in the community with limited means and abilities, helping meet their essential needs.

Sidney professed his faith in Christ at a young age, becoming a devoted Fifth Street Baptist Church member. Following in his father's footsteps, Sidney was committed to serving the church community. Sidney, Jr. actively participated in various church committees, assuming roles such as Chairman of the Trustee Board, President of the Men's Chorus, the church videographer, and the transportation minister-responsible for driving the church bus.

Furthermore, Sidney collaborated with Francis Hawkins to establish a community youth outreach program aimed at strengthening the youth choir through the Jamming for Jesus community outreach initiative. In addition to his involvement in these programs, Sidney generously contributed his repair skills to maintaining the church facilities and grounds, making himself available day or night for the well-being of the church family.

Sidney demonstrated a profound commitment to family, expressing genuine affection for all children. He dedicated time to sharing his wisdom with the younger generation, consistently helping in every possible way. Sidney coached junior league football at Linkhorne Middle School when his kids were young. Admired by children in his family, on his bus routes, and within the church community, Sidney's compassionate and nurturing nature has left a lasting impression on the youth.

Sidney was a real sports fan and was passionate about bowling in his leisure time and he also supported the Dallas Cowboys as his favorite NFL football team. He loved cruising the high seas, and the cultural experience traveling abroad which brought him lots of joy. He also looked forward to the regular Saturday morning gatherings with his Breakfast Buddies, the late John Bruce, Jr., a longtime loyal friend, and the late Joe Johnson at Golden Corral.

Making others happy, particularly during Christmas, became a delight for him. Sidney owned an RV and enjoyed traveling around the country with family and friends. He would drive the kids around in his RV to see the festive lights and revel in the joy that illuminated their faces.

Sidney Harmon, Jr. lived a full and fruitful life enjoying all of the earthly pleasures of God and family and will be missed by all who knew and were touched by him.

For I considered the sufferings of his present time not worthy to be compared with the coming glory to be revealed to us. Romans 8:18
