IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Shirley Yuille
James
December 5, 1936 – November 20, 2017
Shirley Temple Bernice Yuille James was the third oldest child of ten born to Deaconess Helen Dabney Yuille and Deacon William Everett Yuille in Campbell County, Virginia on December 5, 1936. Shirley, or as she was so lovingly called by her sister Dee, "Temp ", was a very hard working, caring, and loving personality. She would give the shirt off her back if needed. She was an active member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church (growing up in Sunday School and singing on the choir) until she moved to Washington, D.C. Shirley graduated from Public Schools in Campbell County. She married young and had a daughter, Brenda and a son, Stanley before moving to Washington, D.C. where she continued her post-secondary education. Eventually, she resided in Hyattsville, Maryland.
Shirley attended Strayer Business College in 1968 taking typing and shorthand which led to her landing a job in the Federal Government with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). She worked as an Executive Secretary to one of the many Directors of FDIC for over 30 years. She became so knowledgeable of FDIC operations, that she earned the reputation of "Miss FDIC". Anything you needed to know from a business perspective, Shirley was the go- to person. She also attended the Federal City College (Now the University of DC), from 1976 to 1978 taking accounting courses for her own personal satisfaction. She retired from Federal Service in December 1998. Shirley's children Brenda and Stanley were the center of her life along with her grandchildren. Her reason for retiring was so that she could baby sit her youngest granddaughter, Natasha. As far as she was concerned, Natasha was her child, and she devoted her time and effort for 3 years to make sure Natasha didn't have to receive child care outside her home.
From the time Natasha was born, until she started pre-school, Shirley, or "MaMa" as the kids call her, bowled in organized leagues two to three times a week with friends and family, taking Natasha with her everywhere she went. Bowling was her love. She travelled to almost every state in the country following the United States Bowling Congress' (USBC) annual women's championship tournament with her daughter Brenda. Natasha was there at every tournament, taking pictures with her MaMa. Shirley was honored with a 25 year participation plaque in 2008 by the USBC. She continued this hobby until 2015 when she began to have physical ailments that kept her from being able to bowl.
MaMa always encouraged her grandchildren to be the best they could be in whatever they took an interest. She was a devout supporter to her grandchildren when it came to them following their dreams, and did everything within her power to help them achieve them. At every basketball game, bowling tournament, weekly bowling league, MaMa was there, like a guardian angel. At one point during the grandchildren's youth bowling years, she had over 20 kids calling her MaMa. Most of those kids are in their late twenties/early thirties, and they still call her MaMa. Shirley's other hobbies included reading fictional literature and completing "word search" puzzles.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Desiree, and former husband Joe Louis James. She is survived by her daughter Brenda James Coleman-Ball (Derek) of Largo, MD; son Stanley Lewis James of Hyattsville, MD, four grandchildren Howard Ball, Jr., (Quinn), Sean Michael Ball, Tiffany Ball, Natasha Coleman-Ball all of Largo, MD; five sisters: Dr. Dolores Johns of Roanoke, VA; Janice Scott and Vivian (Moses) David both of Hampton, VA; Helen "Ruth" Thornton of Atlantic City, NJ; Vera Lavern (Leonard) Bailey, Egg Harbor Township, NJ; three brothers: Zenith (Eleanor) Yuille of Altavista, VA; Leon (Margaret) Yuille of Hampton, VA; Steven Yuille of Roanoke, VA; and uncles, aunts, cousins, and others left to cherish her memory including 26 nieces and nephews; 41 great- nieces and nephews; and 2 great-great nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 29, 2017, at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, 2948 Marysville Rd, Altavista, VA with Rev. Jackson, officiating. The interment will be held in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service. Condolences may be sent to www.Davis-Turner.com.
