Christian
December 8, 1929 – July 11, 2023
Shirley Mayebell West Christian of Madison Heights, Virginia crossed over into the hands of Jesus into eternal peace on July 11, 2023. She was the daughter of the late Walker D. West and Adell M. Elliott West. Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Samuel H. Christian, and her loving children, Mitchell V. Christian and Zelma (Becky) Campbell. Also, preceding Shirley in death were seven of her siblings: Alma Ferguson, Eleanor Jordan, James West, Lawrence West, Martha West, Odester West, and Oscar West.
Shirley leaves to cherish her memory, her devoted daughter, Faithy Burford (Raymond), and Odea West, who was like a son to Shirley. Seven grandchildren: Ramone Burford, Errick Christian, Jamarl Burford (Ayanna), Jermaine Burford, Brandy Beard (Tyrone), Jarvis Campbell, and Jasmine Campbell. As well as nine great-grandchildren: Brandon, Jahmil, Miguel, Bryanna, Jahchi, Micah, Sebastian, Leah, and Amina; a great-great-grandchild, Legend; and sister-in-law, Alice West.
Shirley will also be lovingly remembered by her two sisters, Evelyn Hutcherson and Geneva Moore; daughter-in-law, Josephine Christian; son-in-law, Travis Campbell; and devoted friends who were like family: Eleanor Franklin, Thurman & DeLois Banks, and Michelle Poindexter; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Shirley joined Fairmont Baptist Church at a young age and later joined Scott Zion Baptist Church. Shirley was a homemaker and enjoyed going to church, singing on the choir, sewing, shopping, and talking to friends on the phone. On lovely days it was not uncommon to see Shirley sitting on her front porch enjoying the scenery. Shirley loved to take photos and spend time with family and enjoyed traveling when she was able. Shirley will be remembered as a nice, kind-hearted, and loving woman who would do anything for anyone, especially family but will also be recognized as strong, outspoken, and did not mind expressing her thoughts.
A homegoing celebration will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, July 17, 2023, at Scott Zion Baptist Church. Interment will be in the Scott Zion Baptist Church cemetery. Service of comfort rendered by Davis-Turner Funeral Service.
