Rosser Hezekiah Davis
On the evening of Monday, May 6, 2013, Rosser Davis peacefully passed away, with his family by his side.
Rosser Davis was born in Forest, VA on September 27, 1917. He was the second youngest son of Peyton and Gertrude Davis, who also gave him six sisters and four brothers.
Little is known about Rosser's early life, except that he developed a strong work ethic and an interest in exploring different vocations.
In 1941, Rosser met and married Catherine Lacy in Lynchburg. They subsequently moved to Washington, DC. However, before they could get firmly established, the Navy called Rosser to serve in WWII. Before his discharge, Rosser had traveled across the Pacific to Tokyo Bay.
During the course of his career, Rosser worked as a shipyard welder, waiter, bartender and barber, but he demonstrated his greatest skill as a gardener. In fact, he rose to the position of Base Gardener at Andrews Air Force Base, where he was responsible for the beautification of the place where the President and most foreign dignitaries arrive. His greenhouse was always alive with seasonal blooming plants.
Rosser loved to play golf, attend baseball games, play cards and travel. Rosser and Carol loved to entertain and enjoy the company of their family and friends.
After retiring, Rosser and Carol returned to Lynchburg where they spent many happy years, surrounded by friends and family, and doing the things they enjoyed.
In 2000, Rosser began to suffer from dementia, which slowly but steadily robbed him of his mental and physical abilities. In 2010, he lost Carol, ending their 69 year marriage.
Rosser was the last surviving son of Peyton and Gertrude Davis. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Thomas, Jefferson, Dennis and Thurmond, and his sisters, Edna, Sally, Lena, Belle and Louis.
Rosser Davis is survived by his son, Ronald, and his daughter-in-law, Estelle, of Tallahassee, FL; his granddaughter, Tracy, of Lexington, KY; his sister, Roberta Johnson, of Lynchburg, VA; three, sisters-in-law, Orlando Lacy, Pauline Burton and Edith Stores and numerous nieces, nephews, other family members, friends and acquaintances.
