Obituary

Mrs. Roberta Davis Johnson, 96, of Lynchburg passed away peacefully on Friday February 24, 2017 at the Carriage Hill Senior Living, Bedford VA after a short illness. She had previously resided at Bentley Commons and in the Rivermont neighborhood.

Born on August 21, 1920 in the Altha Grove community in Forest, Bedford County, she was the youngest daughter of eleven children who grew to adulthood born to the union of Peyton and Gertrude Pullen Davis, Four other children died in infancy.

Mrs. Johnson was a 1942 graduate of Dunbar High School in Lynchburg. She was elected Miss Dunbar in 1941. In June of 1942, she married William Archer Johnson of Lynchburg, and to that union three children were born: William A Jr. in 1942, Norris Elsie in 1944, and Otha Linwood in 1946. That marriage ended in divorce, and she never remarried, She became a devoted working mother, extremely focused on the raising of her children. All three graduated from college and have enjoyed long and successful careers.

At an early age, she was baptized at the Altha Grove Baptist Church... When she relocated to Lynchburg, she became a member of the Rivermont Baptist Church, where she served faithfully in a number of capacities for over 70 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, all of her siblings, her former husband, her in-laws and several lifelong friends. She was blessed to be the third longest living child of Peyton and Gertrude, and the fifth to live for at least 90 years old.

Mrs., Johnson is survived by her three loving and devoted children, son William A. Johnson, Jr, Rochester NY; daughter Norris Elsie Myers (the late James), Capital Heights, MD, son,  Linwood (Charlotte), College Park, MD; her devoted former daughter-in-law, Mrs. Mary Ann Wolfe, Rochester NY; three granddaughters, Kelley Michelle Johnson, Washington DC; Kristyn Renee Ampofo (William), Dallas TX; and Wynde Alexandra Johnson, Rochester NY; four granddaughters, three grandsons, and two great-grandchildren; thirteen nieces and ten nephews (several of whom were devoted to her care), and numerous great-nephews and nieces, many cousins, and very close friends.

Her funeral will be held at the Rivermont Baptist Church, 400 Fauquier Street, on Saturday March 4, 2017, at 1:00pm. The church pastor, Rev. Byron Elliott officiating, and Pastor Marcus Jones of the Altha Grove Baptist Church, co-officiating. The eulogy will be delivered by the Rev. Dr. Harry J Pilson. Interment will be at the Altha Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, 1016 Rivermont Avenue, on Friday, March 3 rd from 6-8pm.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made payable to the "Davis Sisters Scholarship Fund of the Rivermont Baptist Church", and mailed to SCI, P.O. Box 10247, Rochester NY. Each gift will be personally acknowledged by the family. Service of comfort rendered by the Davis-Turner Funeral Service.
