IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Reverend James
Winn Morris, Sr.
October 31, 1934 – March 7, 2025
On March 7, 2025, Reverend James W. Morris peacefully entered into eternal rest surrounded by his family. Born on October 31, 1934, in Fluvanna County, VA, he was the son of Edna Mae Morris.
Reverend Morris grew up in Lynchburg and was a graduate of Dunbar High School. After graduating from high school, he proudly served in the United States Navy for 8 years. He returned home after serving his country and was employed by the Lynchburg Foundry. He later was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for over 30 years.
Reverend Morris was a strong man of faith, and he shared his love for God with his family and others. He joined White Rock Baptist Church at a young age and was a faithful member throughout his life. He served as chairman of deacons, Sunday school teacher, and Senior Choir member until he accepted his call into ministry in 1996. Reverend Morris served as the beloved pastor of Triumph Baptist Church in Darlington Heights, VA for 22 years. He dedicated himself to providing spiritual guidance to a congregation he dearly loved until he retired from ministry in 2021. He was also well known and respected in his community where he was viewed as the" neighborhood dad" as he spent time mentoring and uplifting neighbors both young and old.
Reverend Morris was a loving, dedicated husband to his sweetheart and soulmate, Hellen (Lois) Anderson, who survives him. He was an incredible father to his children who will always remember him as "The World's Best Dad". In addition to his wife, those left to cherish his memory are his children, James Morris, JR. (Sandy), Carla Braxton, and Valerie Grant (Michael). He is also survived by his brother, John Morris; brothers and sisters-in-law, Thomas Anderson (Earnestine), Murrell Anderson (Gracie), Carl Anderson, Virginia Jones, Marion Banks, and Linda Swain. Also cherishing his memory, is a devoted niece, Robin Morris, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was the very proud grandfather of Kirstyn Hunt, Courtney Braxton, Keith and Kelvin Grant, and great-grandchildren, Korion Hunt (Jade), Jordan Hunt (Jasmine), Aaron Braxton, Aziya, and Kourtland Hunt; and ten cherished step-grandchildren.
Reverend Morris will be truly missed by his family, church family, and all the lives he touched during his lifetime. The family also wishes to thank the nurses and caregivers of Centra Hospice team that provided comfort to him and the family during his final days.
A homegoing celebration will be held at 12:00 PM on Thursday, March 13, 2025, at Triumph Baptist Church, 2756 Darlington Heights Road, Cullen, VA 23934. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Service of comfort rendered by Davis-Turner Funeral Service.
