IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Reverend Carlton
Thomas Johnson
May 23, 1934 – August 20, 2025
Reverend Carlton Thomas Johnson, a devoted servant of God, a husband, father, grandfather, and veteran, entered into eternal rest on August 20, 2025, at the age of 91.
Born on May 23, 1934, in Forest, Virginia, he was the son of the late William H. Johnson, Sr. and Rosa Johnson who was his role model. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Edna F. Brown.
Reverend Johnson attended elementary school in Forest, VA, and attended high school in Bedford, VA. He confessed religion at an early age. He was baptized in a creek and joined the Chestnut Grove Baptist Church and lived a life of faith, service, and dedication. Answering the call to serve his country, he was enlisted in the United States Air Force and Army. He spent a total of 7 years in the military, 4 in Japan with the Air Force and 2 years in Germany with the Army. His military service reflected his courage, discipline, and commitment to duty.
After time in the armed forces, Reverend Johnson followed a higher calling to ministry. He was ordained in the Baptist tradition and faithfully pastored over a number of years, leading congregations with wisdom, compassion, and a heart for God's people. He preached the gospel with conviction, offered comfort to the brokenhearted, and stood as a shepherd to all entrusted to his care. On August 8, 1985, Reverend Johnson became the pastor of Lawyers Chapel Baptist Church later becoming Lawyers Missionary Baptist Church.
He leaves to cherish his memory his sister, Adelle Jackson, grandchildren, along with extended church family, dear friends, and the many parishioners whose lives he touched through his ministry.
He was blessed to be stepdad, "Pop", to her 7 children: Jennifer Mason (David) of Forest, VA, Raymond Junior Brown (Angela) of Rustburg, VA, Eddie Brown of Lynchburg, VA, Kenneth Brown (Danie) of Jacksonville, NC, John Brown of Evington, VA, Sharon Jackson of Prince William County, VA, and Shelia Paige (Kerry) of Concord, VA. An especially devoted grandson, who resided with him, Kelvin Tinsley of Forest, VA, and 11 other grandchildren who affectionately called him "Gandy" and "De-De". Reverend Johnson always said, "he got blessed by Edna's children and family!!" He was especially good to the grandkids and was faithful in picking them up after school. Of course, now, there are great-great grandchildren. He was loved and will be missed!!! Also, he will be remembered fondly by Edna's sister, Ms. Terressa Robertson; her brother, Osie Fowler (Gladys); a host of nieces, nephews and cousins, in her family, and their special friend, Mrs. Ollie Mason.
Reverend Johnson also was faithful to the family run non-profit, Agape Ambassadors, Inc. of which David & Jennifer are the founders. He shared the "Who is Jesus" talk with incarcerated teens and many came to Christ over his 20 years of evangelism in that ministry. He was a BELOVED team member, and we honor him for his service.
Reverend Johnson will be remembered for his steadfast faith, his love of family, his unwavering patriotism, and his gentle but powerful voice that pointed others toward Christ.
"Well done, good and faithful servant…enter into the joy of your Lord." (Matthew 25:23)
The family wishes to thank all who have offered prayers, comfort, and support during this time.
A memorial service will be held at 12:00 P.M. on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at Lawyers Missionary Baptist Church. Service of comfort rendered by Davis-Turner Funeral Service.
