Obituary

Mrs. Patsy Lee Pinn (Smith), 74, peacefully transitioned to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 8, 2024, surrounded by her family. In life many would describe her as a soft-spoken, kind-hearted and devout Christian. There were times however, her close friends and family would tell you, Patsy could be straightforward and no nonsense. This combination of gentle caring with an underlying seriousness ensured Patsy would be ever resolute in achieving her goals. She was committed firstly to God, family, and to helping others. For all of her earthly days Patsy remained steadfast to those goals and commitments.

Born in Lynchburg, Virginia on August 5, 1949, Patsy was the eldest daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. Ronald and Bettie Woodruff Smith. She was also raised in part by her stepfather, the late Franklin D. Smith. Patsy was preceded in death by her brothers, Raymond Levi and Gregory "Blue" Smith; nephew, Jermond Smith; and great-nephew, Daeron Smith.

A young cheerful Patsy sang in her high school Chorus, participated in Future Homemakers of America, and joined the Student Council. Her ambition was to become a Registered Nurse. In 1967 she was granted a high school diploma from Dunbar High School then joined C.B. Fleet Company, Inc., now Fleet Pharmaceuticals. After more than 30 years working at C.B. Fleet, Patsy continued on in pursuit of her teenage dream. She took night classes before retiring fully from her day job. She worked tirelessly through the practicals and Certified Nursing Assistant requirements. On the 23rd of May 2005, Mrs. Patsy Pinn proudly graduated with Honors from the National College of Business & Technology receiving an Associate of Science degree in Medical Assisting. Soon after, she successfully completed the exam to become a Certified Medical Assistant. Family and friends would testify that this newest chapter of Patsy's life brought her a lot of joy. She was well liked and greatly appreciated at the Free Clinic of Lynchburg where she worked after retirement from C.B. Fleet. Often she would even volunteer to help care for members of her church family or community.

As a dedicated member of St. Paul Baptist Church for many years, Patsy sat on the Usher Board, taught Sunday School and served the Lord through singing in the Gospel Chorus. Her church family may describe her as very committed and down to earth. Her relaxed demeanor but notable presence in the church will be greatly missed.

One cannot lovingly reflect on the wonderful woman Patsy was without also remembering a beautiful love story that was part of her life. Patsy Lee Smith met David Wayne Pinn, Sr. 'Boo' at an early age. They became an inseparable couple and were wed at White Rock Baptist Church in April 1972. Whether fishing with family, outings to the lake, bowling or, most importantly, attending church-Patsy and 'Boo', as many affectionately called him, just enjoyed being in each other's company. Her husband was a poet and a preacher. Patsy was his muse, his love and the subject of many of his written works. Sadly, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, the late Reverend David W. Pinn, Sr., in 2003.

Patsy is survived by her caring son, David W. Pinn, Jr. (Marilyn) of Bedford and devoted daughter, Denise L. Pinn-Jones of Forest, VA. She was blessed with one very special granddaughter whom she adored, Synquisity D. Pinn of Virginia Beach, VA, and years later a lovely step-granddaughter, Jasmine Ware. Her siblings will dearly miss her as well: brothers, Ronald A. Smith (Joyce) of Madison Heights and Jerry Smith (Brenda) of Lynchburg and sisters, Cherlyn Thomas, Gladys and Jennifer Smith, all of Lynchburg. She is survived by one sister-in-law, Mrs. Evora J. Pinn (wife of the late Dr. Melvin T. Pinn, Jr.) and her maternal uncles: Alvin Woodruff (Ann), Owen Woodruff, and Sidney Woodruff. Patsy will also be fondly remembered by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and, of course, her fur babies, Katie and Oreo.

Some may be surprised to learn that Patsy took piano lessons briefly after her children were born. More recently, she enjoyed crossword puzzles, spending time with friends, cooking for her family and was a fervent reader. Patsy will be remembered for the strong but quiet woman that she was and will live on forever in our hearts.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 25, 2024, at St. Paul Baptist Church in Forest, VA. Service of comfort rendered by Davis-Turner Funeral Service.
