Obituary

Aurelia Mildred Carter Rose was born in Amherst, Virginia, on January 13, 1920. She was the third child and oldest surviving daughter of Anderson Carter, Jr. and Julia Alma Sledd Carter. (Her older sister Julia Florence Carter died as an infant before Mildred was born.) She had one older brother, Otha Lee Carter. Mildred’s birth was followed by seven younger siblings: Ralph, Irene Hortense, Patrie, John, Edward, Robert, and Rose. She also had two older sisters, Frances and Mary, from her father’s first marriage.

Mildred transitioned to her heavenly home on Saturday, April 11, 2026. She is survived by her sons: Walter Lee Rose (Kathleen) of Amherst and Arthur of San Francisco, California; her granddaughters: Dr. Wanda Rose of Amherst and Angela Rose-Bounds (David) of Lawnside, New Jersey; her great granddaughters: Zaire Ellis (Kareem), Chase Smith, and Desiree Bounds; her great grandsons: Walter Kahson Bounds, Omar Menson, Jr., and Nigel Smith; her great great grandchildren: Zarrea Wright, Zakari Ellis, and Paris Menson. Mildred is also survived by her sister Irene Hortense Holmes (age 102) of Alexandria, Virginia, and her brother Robert Carter (age 93) of Mount Laurel, New Jersey. She is also survived by a plethora of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Mildred was pre-deceased by her husband Oscar Rose after 65 years of marriage; her granddaughter Sabrina Wright; her parents Anderson Carter and Alma Sledd Carter; her siblings: Frances Goode, Mary Williams, Otha Carter, Ralph Carter, Patrie Burton, John Carter, Edward Carter, and Rose Quearles.

Mildred joined Timothy Baptist Church in Pleasant View at a young age. In New Jersey, she was an active member of Friendship Baptist Church. When she and Oscar returned to Amherst in May 1982, they united with the Piney Grove Baptist Church. Mildred was a member of the Willing Workers Ministry. She was a consistent contributor to the church and supporter of all the church programs and activities. She made sure her monthly contributions were there even when she could not attend. She loved Piney Grove Baptist Church. Quiet, ladylike, and dignified by nature, Mildred was always kind and thoughtful. She made many friends in the church and the wider community.

Growing up as the oldest girl in the household, Mildred was given great responsibilities. One of those responsibilities was to be a role model for her younger siblings. She took that responsibility seriously and exercised it throughout her life. As her siblings reached adulthood, four of them, one by one, came to live with her and her husband in New Jersey, where they helped them to settle into urban life.

Her family and friends are blessed to have known her and to have had her in their lives for so long. Mildred is personified in Proverbs 31:10-31when Lemuel describes the virtuous wife. She was truly an example of a life well lived. To God be the glory!

A homegoing celebration will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, April 24, 2026, at Piney Grove Baptist Church. Mrs. Rose will be on view one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Briarwood Memorial Gardens. Service of comfort entrusted to Davis-Turner Funeral Service.
