Michael Gwaltney departed this life on July 15, 2025, in his sleep. He was born in New York City, NY, on September 30, 1943, to Helen Pettigrew Govan and the late Jack Keith Gwaltney, Sr.

He attended Campbell County Public Schools and played in the high school band. He joined Mt. Peeler Baptist Church at an early age. He also served in the United States Army. Michael worked for Lynchburg Public Schools at E.C. Glass High School in security for 27 years.

Michael was preceded in death by his father; his wife, Sheila; his daughter, April; and his son, Christopher Gwaltney.

Those left to cherish Michael's memories are his mother, Helen Pettigrew Govan; 2 daughters, Michelle Gwaltney Jones of the Bronx, NY and Michelle Gwaltney of Virginia Beach, VA; one son, Michael Gwaltney, Jr. of Queens, NY; a brother, Jack Gwaltney, Jr.; 5 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren; 2 nieces, Angel Hairston and Patricia Whitley.

A homegoing celebration will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at Mt. Peeler Baptist Church. Interment will be in the Archer Creek Cemetery. Service of comfort rendered by Davis-Turner Funeral Service.
