Obituary

Maxine G. Washington, 78, passed away peacefully at Lynchburg General Hospital (CENTRA) at 12:00 pm on Monday, March 29, 2021.

Maxine was born on November 24, 1942 in Lynchburg, VA at the old Lynchburg General Hospital on Federal Street to the late Sis. Vivian T. Nowlin and raised by the late Rev. William W. Nowlin.

Maxine grew up in Lynchburg and attended Robert S. Payne School and graduated from Dunbar High School in 1960. After her high school graduation, she moved to Florida with the family she was working for as a housekeeper and nanny. After many years in Florida, she moved to New York City where she worked for General Motors and then in a doctor's office in White Plains, NY. She moved back to Lynchburg, VA in 1989 and reconnected with her family.

Maxine was baptized at Rivermont Baptist Church at an early age under the pastorate of Rev. Albert Hill and upon her return from New York was rebaptized there in December, 1989 under the pastorate of Rev. Leonard N. Smith. She was a member of the Senior Choir, Sanctuary Choir, Wednesday Night Bible Study Class, Sunday School and helped with Vacation Bible School. Maxine was committed to the care and well being of the senior citizens at Rivermont Baptist Church and when she wasn't working at Buffalo Air Handling, spent her time ministering to their needs. They will miss her greatly.

She leaves to cherish the memory of life with her, her husband Clarence O. Washington; brothers Rev. Aloysious (Kathy) Nowlin and Wilman Nowlin; and sister Ardina (Marvin-Deceased) Abbitt; step-children Leander Washington, Pierre Washington and Kevin (Michelle) Washington; family friend, Robert Hurt and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

There is much that could be written about Maxine and what she did but just know that she lived a full life.

"There are no tears in heaven nor grief of any kind
I leave this final teardrop to those I've left behind.
Though absent from the body, I'm present with the Lord
The joy of my salvation is now my full reward."

A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Monday, April 5, 2021 at Davis-Turner Funeral Service with the Pastor of Rivermont Baptist Church, Rev. Byron J. Elliott as eulogist and Dr. Carl B. Hutcherson, officiating.  The interment will be in the Rivermont Baptist Church Cemetery.  Family and friends may view on Friday from 12:00 noon to 6:00 PM and Saturday from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM.  Condolences may be sent to www.Davis-Turner Funeral Service.  Service of comfort rendered by Davis-Turner Funeral Service.
