Mary Fletcher Sandidge departed this life on August 29, 2023, at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was born on October 30, 1930, in Amherst, Virginia. She was the fourth of fourteen children born to the late Lilbert Fletcher and the late Fannie Rose Fletcher. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Sandidge; six brothers, William, Robert, Chestean, Lilbert, Jr., of Amherst, VA and Leslie and Earl of Newark, DE; five sisters, Dorothy and Berniece of Amherst, VA, Hester of Washington, DC, Eva of Delaware, and Emma of Maryland; and her grandson, Brandon Sorrells of Amherst, VA.
As a child, Mary accepted Jesus as her personal Lord and Savior. She was a lifelong, faithful member of St. Peter's Baptist Church where she served on the Usher Board until her health declined. She enjoyed fellowship with members, friends, and family. She would declare the Goodness and Faithfulness of the Lord to close family and friends with her testimony, "The Lord has kept me from seen and unseen danger" and "If I had a thousand tongues, I could not thank Him enough!"
Mary retired from Amherst Garment Factory. She also enjoyed sewing as a hobby. She made outfits, quilts, pillows, and hats. Many relatives, friends, and neighbors requested her cloth hats.
Mary loved her family and would often tell her family, "The family that prays together, stays together". She is survived by three children, Robert "Bob" Sandidge and his wife, Dianne, Dora Dianne Sorrells and her husband, Obie, and Melissa Elder and her husband, Richard all of Amherst, VA. Nine grandchildren, Latisha (Mack), Obie, II, Raimon (Katrina), Adam (Kristina), Traci, Mario (Natasha), Patriece (Mason), Nicholas, and Dominick. Seven great-grandchildren, Malachi (Liliana), Lailani, Ryan, Evelyn, Roman, Saige, and Mason, Jr. Two sisters, Bessie Smith of Maryland and Nancy Fletcher of Washington, DC; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Fletcher of Amherst, VA; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
A homegoing celebration will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at St. Peter's Baptist Church. Interment will be in the Christian Aid Society Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, September 4, 2023, at Davis-Turner Funeral Service. Service of comfort rendered by Davis-Turner Funeral Service.
