Martha Turner departed this life on December 20, 2025, at Fairmont Crossing Health & Rehab Center. She was born on December 13, 1922, in Amherst County, the daughter of the late John D. Turner and Hallie Lee Turner.
She graduated from Amherst County Training School in 1940 and then attended Storer's College in Harper Ferry, WV, but later transferred to West Virginia State College and graduated in 1945. Ms. Turner taught in the elementary schools of Albermarle County for eight years. After resigning from teaching in 1954, she moved to Philadelphia, PA, and worked for the Society of Friends (Quakers) as a secretary.
Ms. Turner was a member of the Piney Grove Baptist Church in Amherst County as a teenager, but joined the First Baptist Church in Charlottesville while teaching in Albemarle County. While in Philadelphia, she joined the White Rock Baptist Church and was an active member. She was also active in the West Virginia State College Alumni Association, Delaware Valley Chapter in Philadelphia.
After thirty-two years of working in Philadelphia, she retired and moved back to Amherst to be with and help care for her aged mother. Reading, music, and travel were her hobbies. She and her sister, Fannie Langhorne, took a Caribbean cruise and a trip to Europe.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Harold and William Turner; her sisters, Zelia L. Kidd, Fannie Langhorne, Jean Wright, and Mercedes Brown. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
