Mae Elizabeth Smith Thomas of Amherst VA finished her earthly journey and took flight to her heavenly home, Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009, after an illness she so gallantly fought. She was born in Amherst County on August 12, 1942, the daughter of the late Deacon Earl Smith and Deaconess Hattie C. Smith. Mae was the wife of Oscar Thomas.
She is preceded in death by a grandson Terrence Lee Myers; one brother, Earl Smith Jr. and a sister Shirley Smith Johnson. Mae accepted Christ at an early age and joined the St. Mary's Baptist of Lowesville, she was faithful member. Mae leaves to cherish her memory, one daughter, Cassandra Thomas Myers (Gene) and one grandson, Travis Myers of Clifford, VA; two brothers, Kenneth Smith (Ethel) of Amherst and Gene Smith (Alix) of Fredericksburg; two sisters, Phyllis S. Davis (Herman) of Clifford, VA and Genevieve S. Smith of Amherst; one aunt, Marion Campbell (Helen) of Washington, DC; two uncles, James Campbell (Shirley) of Maryland and Horace Sparrow (Carrie) of Chicago, IL; two sisters-in-law, Carrie Smith and Roberta Douglas (Earl); three brothers-in-law, Samuel E. Thomas, Jr. (Connie), Rev. Leonard Thomas (Belle) and Walter L. Thomas and host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends, and a devoted friend Clarine Jefferson (Missie).
A funeral service will be held 1:00 PM Friday, February 20, 2009 at St. Peter Baptist Church, Amherst with Rev. Robert Cabell, Jr., officiating and Pastor Margaret P.C. Nelson, as eulogist.
