Mabel Massie Hughes entered eternal rest while surrounded by family with a smile on her face on January 29, 2025, at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was born in Amherst County on June 12, 1931, to the late George and Maggie Massie. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas A Hughes, Jr.; 3 children, Thomas Hughes, III, Diane Jackson, and Larry K. Hughes; 4 brothers, Leonard Massie, Sandford Massie, Robert Massie, and Norman Massie; 3 sisters, Florine Miller, Aileen Jones, and Emma Bryant; and a grandson, Chris Hughes.
At an early age, she was baptized and joined Timothy Baptist Church, and later in life, she joined St. Peter's Baptist Church, where she was active in numerous organizations. She loved music and enjoyed playing the piano and singing at several churches throughout Amherst and Nelson County. Mabel was known for working at different restaurants in the county. Many will remember Mabel for her years of service at Amherst County Public Schools, where she served as a school bus driver for 44 years. She loved entertaining family and friends, flowers, the sound of laughter, and sitting on her porch in the sunshine.
Mabel leaves to cherish her memories, 2 sons, Charles (Octavia) Hughes, and Edward (Leigh) Hughes. She is also survived by Sam (Rudy) Diggs whom she raised as her own; daughter-in-law, Debbie Hughes; a bonus daughter, Brenda (Bobby) Hudson; a sister, Shirley Yolanda Kirksey; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
A homegoing celebration will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 2, 2025, at St. Peter's Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at Davis-Turner Funeral Service. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
