Obituary

Lucy W. Young, 85, of Rocky Mount, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 27, 2022 surrounded by loved ones. She survived a short period of illness after a pancreatic cancer diagnosis. She was an active member of First Baptist Church in Rocky Mount until her illnesses prevented attendance. Ms. Young confidently assured her family and friends that she was not afraid of death and that the Lord had given her the peace that He would take care of her.

Ms. Young served her community for over thirty years as a teaching assistant, mentoring countless students in numerous schools in Franklin County. She enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, yard work, and nature. Ms. Young also loved animals - especially her beloved dogs Al and Dimples. Most importantly, she loved the Lord, nurtured her own children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and hundreds of students with love and kindness. She had a warm, loving personality and never met a stranger. Her sense of humor was insightful and will be greatly missed.

Ms. Young was preceded in death by her parents, Taft and Della Tyree Wade; husband, Herman Young; brothers, William Wade, James Fralin, Lawson Fralin; sister, Helen Hampton; and her special friend, Jeremiah Green.

Surviving are her son, Reggie (Tina) Young of Bluefield, WV; daughter, Regina (Jerome) Johnson of Rocky Mount, VA; Grandson, Sheldon (Michelle) Johnson of Roanoke, VA; sister, Sadie Tuning of Rocky Mount, VA; Sisters-in-law, Lillie Reeves of Rocky Mount, VA, Ruth Young of Bronx, NY, Frances Wade of Columbus, OH; Brothers-in-law, Fred (Dorreth) Young of Anchorage, AK, Gilbert (Arlene) Young of Richmond, VA; Special friends, Vivian Edwards and Florella Johnson of Rocky Mount, VA; Step-grandchildren, Terrell Watkins, A'Tiyah Watkins; Step great-grandchildren, Ja'Niyah, Jakorey, Jalen, Jameir, and Neveah Watkins; and step great-great-granddaughter, Kimora Watkins of Bluefield, WV.

The family would like to offer sincerest thanks to Beverly Rutter and Carilion Hospice of Franklin County for the wonderful care provided to Ms. Young throughout her illness. Additionally, the family would like to offer a special thanks to Pastor Christopher Coates and Ms. Young's church family of First Baptist Church.

Funeral Services will be conducted at First Baptist Church of Rocky Mount on Saturday, April 2, 2022 at 2:00pm with Christopher Coates officiating. Interment will follow at Franklin Memorial Park.
