Joseph Amos Martin, of Lynchburg, Virginia, died unexpectedly on
February 18, 2016, at the age of 55. Joe is survived by his wife, Julia Bruce Martin; his aunt, Clara Hubbard; his brother, Melvin Martin; his sisters, Teresa Harris and Rose Mary Robinson-Short; nieces, and
nephews. He is predeceased by his mother, Bertha Independence
Martin, and his uncle, George Hubbard.
Joe was born in Lynchburg on September 17, 1960. He served in the
United States Air Force. He graduated from Lynchburg College with a
degree in Social Science and worked for 10 years at the Central
Virginia Training School and at the ARC of Central Virginia. On April 4, 1998, he married Julia, a reading specialist and the love of his life. He was a kind, gentle, and caring husband to Julia and a warm,
loving patriarchal figure to the rest of his family. Joe spent the past 14 years caring for Julia after her tragic accident in 2002. His
unwavering loyalty and devotion to his wife was exemplary.
Joe enjoyed taking Julia on daily outings, golfing, playing the piano,
going to car races, and spending time with family and friends. He had a strong Christian faith and spent much time studying the Bible and
worshipping God. He will be deeply missed by his friends,
family, and all who knew him.
A funeral service is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 24, at Cornerstone Community Church at 525 Old Graves Mill Road,
Lynchburg, VA. Pastor Willie Taylor will officiate. The family will
receive guests at the church an hour prior to the funeral service.
