IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John "Chief"
Harry Thomas, Sr.
December 7, 1935 – June 17, 2025
On Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at his home, God sent His angels to gently escort Deacon John H. Thomas, Sr., affectionately known as "Chief," to his eternal rest.
He was born on December 7, 1935, in Amherst, Virginia, to the union of Dock and Margaret Morris Thomas, the eldest of four children. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ollie Henley Thomas; his son, John Thomas, Jr.; his daughter, Sherry Harris; and two brothers, Larry C. Thomas and Adolph Winfield Thomas.
Deacon Thomas retired from Griffin Pipe after 25 years of dedicated service. In retirement, he found joy in cutting wood, fishing, dancing to his favorite tunes, and spending time at the barbershop. A devoted member of Saint Mark Baptist Church, he served faithfully on the Trustee Board and as a Deacon since March 1983.
He leaves to cherish his memory four daughters and their husbands: Joyce and James Sandidge of Madison Heights, Virginia; Victoria and Leroy Sparrow of Fort Washington, Maryland; Cynthia and Ronnie Haynes of Madison Heights, Virginia; and Sandra and Curtis Jordan of Madison Heights, Virginia. He is also survived by his two sons: Donald and Tyses Thomas of Appomattox, Virginia, and Jasper Thomas of Amherst, Virginia; as well as an adopted son in love, Antonio "Winky" Thomas; and sister, Janet Thomas.
Deacon Thomas is lovingly remembered by 10 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends
