Obituary

On Wednesday evening, December 9, 2009, God sent down an angel for John Gilbert White, Jr (Pic). No more suffering , no more pain, his struggle is over. Immediately set free from his infirmity and saved by Grace.

He was born in Lynchburg, VA, the son of the late John Gilbert White, Sr and Helen Grier White. "Pic" was educated in Lynchburg Public Schools and was a 1969 Graduate of Dunbar High School. He accepted Christ at an early age and joined the Wingfield Baptist Church, where he sang on the Gospel Chorus until his illness. When the chorus recorded an album in 1978, he sang, "Sign me up for the Christian Jubilee."

He retired from General Electric after many years of service. In 1979, he started his own business, "White's Cleaning Service." His work ethic and loyalty to his customers exceeded the standards of that time. He understood customer service and took great pride in his work. "Pic" was passionate about the Washington Redskins and hosted Superbowl parties for the "skins, where he served his famous chilli. He enjoyed hunting and was an avid fisherman, fishing in both the James River and the deep sea. He had a love for the Peaks of Otter and the Otter Creek Dam area. "Pic" was also an exceptional cook and eager to sample various cuisines. Even during his illness he loved to frequent various restaurants.

"Pic" was a devoted son, father, and grand-father. Those left to cherish his memory and celebrate his life are his three daughters, Bevley W. Green (Andre) of Saraland, AL; Farley Dickey, of Lynchburg, VA; and Alexis White, of Charlotte, NC. Two grand-daughters, Khadijah Williams and Zharinah Crews of Lynchburg. One devoted grandson, Enzo Jon White, of Charlotte, NC. One brother, Larry White (Wanda) of Forest, VA. One niece, Shaina White and a nephew Larry White, Jr, both of Forest. He is also survived by one aunt, Barbara Davis, of Madison Heights, VA, a life-long friend Evelyn Dickey-White, of Charlotte, NC, and other relatives and friends.

"Pic" was known for his loving personality and his way with people. He will be missed by many.

The family would like to extend sincere appreciation to the Guggenheimer Nursing Home family for their support and compassion during our loved one's illness.
