Obituary

Jesse Lewis Davis, Jr., 95, passed into Eternity on Sunday morning, October 22, 2023, at his residence. Born on February 13, 1928, to the late Jessie, Sr. and Lucille Johnson Davis, he was the second born of their 10 children.

Jesse joined Union Hill Baptist Church, Amherst, VA, at an early age and remained a faithful and interested member; later, he joined Brookville Baptist Church in Lynchburg in order to worship closer to his home, serving faithfully as a Trustee as long as his health allowed. Jesse was a graduate of Amherst County Training School and a former employee of Sweet Briar College as well as The Greenbriar in White Sulphur Springs, WV. After 42 years of employment at the former Lynchburg Foundry, Jesse retired in 1992.

On November 6, 1948, Jesse married the love of his life—Amanda E. Hutcherson. To this union was born Lewis E. Davis (Annie Laura), Marshall D. Davis (Marjorie), and Jacquelyn I. O'Neill (Stephen). Jesse was a faithful and devoted husband and a loving and honorable role-model for his children. In time he was blessed with three grandchildren, April, Ashley, and Peter; and two great-grandchildren, Ari and Lena.

"If I can't be a help to you, what good am I?" Jesse believed we should help one another. This belief in helping others—be it family, friends, or strangers—was based on his strong faith in Almighty God and belief in Jesus as his Savior.

Until mobility became an issue, Jesse enjoyed fishing with Amanda and friends, deer hunting with "the boys" (friends) and playing Bid Whist. Being a good provider, Jesse built a home in 1958-59 with the help of his children, brothers, cousins, and friends of the family. And because you didn't get paid if you didn't show up for work, Jesse walked to Lynchburg Foundry many a winter day through the snow. Taking care of his family was important.

In addition to his parents, Jesse was predeceased by his siblings, Elnora Davis, Loretta Austin, Cassell Davis, Ella Meade, Linda Fleming, and Donald Davis; brothers-in-law, Jesse Morton, William Austin, and John Meade; and sister-in-law, Mary Davis. In addition to his wife, children, and their spouses, grand and great-grandchildren, Jesse is survived by his brother, Marvin Davis; sisters, Isadore Morton and Ernestine Williams; brothers-in-law, Algie Williams and Robert Fleming; sister-in-law, Arlene Davis; and a lot of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A homegoing celebration will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, October 27, 2023, at Greater Brookville Church, 1916 Florida Avenue, Lynchburg, VA. The family will be receiving friends one hour prior to the service. Interment in the Union Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Service of comfort rendered by Davis-Turner Funeral Service.
