Jerome "Coach Shifty" Johnson, 59, of Lynchburg, Virginia, passed away peacefully on November 11, 2025. Born on September 20, 1966, in Lynchburg, Virginia, Jerome lived a life filled with purpose, generosity, laughter, and unwavering devotion to his community.

Many knew him as a mentor, leader, and father-figure who spent more than three decades shaping young athletes in football and track and field, guiding them both on and off the field. His influence extended far beyond the scoreboard; he taught discipline, compassion, and resilience, touching countless lives with his guidance and wisdom.

Jerome also built a beloved legacy in broadcasting and entertainment. As a well-known DJ on WJJS and Vibe 100, he became a familiar and cherished voice throughout the region. His love for music, signature mixes, and smooth on-air personality brought joy to thousands of listeners. In addition to his radio career, Jerome was a talented sports announcer, lending his booming voice, energy, and passion to local games and community events. Whether behind a microphone or in the press box, he had a gift for making every moment feel exciting.

Outside of coaching and broadcasting, Jerome found his greatest peace in the kitchen. Cooking was his love language. Whether he was grilling, experimenting with new recipes, or preparing meals for holidays and gatherings, Jerome poured creativity and heart into every dish. His food brought people together and filled every space with love.

He was a devoted father, brother, mentor, and friend. His humor, kindness, and steady presence touched people from all walks of life. To know Jerome was to feel supported, uplifted, and genuinely cared for.

Jerome was the beloved son of the late Mattie Johnson. He is survived by his brother, Boyd "BJ" Johnson; stepdaughters, Simone Garrison and Cherrelle Meredith; his nephew, Brian Johnson; his great-nephew, Ryan Johnson; his granddaughter, Sage Garrison; his Uncle, George Johnson; his Aunt, Henrietta Johnson; and a host of other relatives, former players, radio listeners, and dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, November 22, 2025, at the E.C. Glass High School Auditorium in Lynchburg, Virginia. The family welcomes all who knew him, whether through sports, radio, announcing, or his unforgettable cooking, to join in honoring his remarkable life.

The Johnson family extends heartfelt thanks for the prayers, love, and support shared during this time of profound loss.

Jerome's legacy lives on in every life he inspired, every song he shared, and every meal he lovingly prepared. His compassion, spirit, and love will never be forgotten.
