James Edward Garland passed away Monday, February 28, 2022, at his home. He was born March 23, 1938, in Lynchburg, VA to the late Edward James Garland and Mittie Garland. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ella F. Garland; two daughters, Juanita Allen and Ella J. Garland; a brother, Oscar Garland; and sister, Mamie Morgan.

He retired from B&W and was enjoying his retirement by spending time with family and friends, along with traveling. He was a member of St. Mary's Baptist Church in Amherst, VA. James will be remembered for his big heart, sense of humor, generosity, strength and most of all, his contagious laugh. He left to mourn two daughters, Mary Garland and Pamela Raine of Lynchburg, VA; five sons, Leo (Tracie) Garland of Madison Heights, VA, Leon Garland, Kirk Garland of Madison Heights, VA, Jason Garland of Lynchburg, VA and Kevin Garland of Amherst, VA; a brother, William (Barbara) Garland of Washington, DC; a sister, Lucy Garland of Lynchburg, VA; sister-in-law, Shirley Garland; a devoted friend, Frances Meade of Amherst, VA; and many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 12, 2022 at Family Life Church on Timberlake Road in Lynchburg, VA. A family night will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, March 11, 2022, at St. Mary's Baptist Church in Amherst, VA.
