Obituary

Gloria S. Berkley (Nonnie) departed this lIfe Tuesday, November 25, 2020 after a brief illness.

Gloria was born October 24, 1951 to the late Richard and Frances Spaulding. She was also preceded in death by her brothers Richard, Howard and Steward Spaulding.

She leaves behind her husband of fifty years Richard L. Berkley, daughter Charlena Banks (Anthony), son Richard Berkley Jr., and foster daughter Amy Mithchell. Brothers Michael (Kathy) and Vincent (Rosalind) Spaulding, and two sisters Cynthia and Maria Spaulding. Nine grandchildren: Terrance MItchell, Tiana Berkley, RaShonda Berkley, Richard Berkley III, Anthony Banks Jr., Natassja Murphy, Briana Mitchell, Autumn Banks and Sy"Naisha Bruce. Seventeen great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. She also leaves Shirley Reynolds, her devoted friend of forty years.

Gloria accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Saviour in the early eighties and became a true servant of the Lord along with being an active member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. She served faithfully on the Usher Board and was willing to MC on any occasion. In 2007 she joined Tree of Life Ministries and quickly became a beloved member, She especially loved her time spent checking the children in. She loved serving the Lord and would never hesitate to praise Him and give Him his Glory.

Gloria graduated from Evander Childs High School and had a Bachelor Degree in Business from Averett University. She was employed by GLTC from 1977 until her retirement in January 2018, working her way from payroll clerk to Director of Human Resources. She also ran their onsite Credit Union for many years. Through the years she served on many boards including the GLTC, Johnson Health Center and the Black Church Week of Prayer. She was appointed by   then Governor L Douglas Wilder to the VA Transportation Safety Board. She was also on the Board for the Benjamin and Edith Spaulding Descendants. In 2004 she became a member of CHAP (Coalition of HIV and AIDS Prevention) and served as its president until her passing.

Gloria loved spending time with her family and friends, traveling with her husband and fishing in her pond.

In lieu of flowers we ask that you make donations to CHAP which was an organization that was near and dear to her.
