Obituary

Freda L. Mays, 57, passed away Wednesday, November 23, 2016. Born January 24, 1959 to Shirley Mays Megginson and the late Elliott Sidney Mays, Sr. in Amherst County, VA. She was preceded in death by her father, brother Norvell Mays, sister Noel Mays, half-sister Jeannette Mays Rucker, grandparents Norvell and Beatrice Evans; and Robert and Elnora Mays.
Freda accepted Christ in her life at an early age. She was baptized and joined Scott Zion Baptist Church in Madison Heights, VA. She attended Ferrum College where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Work. Soon after she moved to Orlando, Florida and began a satisfying career in social work.
In the mid-90s Freda turned her attention to the music industry and opened her own talent management firm. Her clients included the 69 Boyz, Quad City DJs, RAab, 95 South, Dis-n-Dat and II D Extreme; all of whom became nationally recognized artists.
As a well-known and well-respected music industry executive and entertainment consultant, Freda was instrumental in securing her clients' songs on movie soundtracks such as Space Jam, Dr. Dolittle, Dangerous Minds, Blue Streak, High School High and Sunset Park. She also landed a small role in the movie Passenger 57; and was on the Oprah Winfrey show twice. In 2015, Freda added author to her name with her self-published book entitled "My Naked Truth about Breast Cancer and Being Single," which became a top seller on Amazon's best-selling books list.
She leaves to cherish her memory a loving mother, Shirley Mays Megginson; seven sisters Dallas Jones, Atlanta, GA; Polly Ford (Keith), Beatrice Ferguson, Janet Mays; and Hope Callahan, all of Lynchburg, VA; Rita Holder and Eydie Holder of East Sroudsburg, PA. Four brothers Elliott Sidney Mays, Jr. and Wallace Mays (Barbara, "BJ") of Madison Heights, VA; Gary Mays (Wanda) of Amherst County, VA; and step-brother Curtis MegginShe leaves to cherish her memory a loving mother, Shirley Mays Megginson; her sisters Dallas Jones, Atlanta, GA; Polly Ford (Keith), Beatrice Ferguson, Janet Mays and Hope Callaham (Donald), all of Lynchburg, VA. Her brothers Elliott Sidney Mays, Jr. and Wallace Mays, Sr. (Barbara, "BJ") of Madison Heights, VA; Gary Mays, Sr., (Wanda) of Amherst County, VA. Sister-in-law Mammie M. Mays, Lynchburg, VA; and Godsister Elaine Thomas, Troy, NY.

Half-sisters Rita Holder and Eydie Holder of East Sroudsburg, PA., and Elizabeth Wilkins, Kansas City, MO. Half-brother Steve Mays, Lynchburg, VA and step-brother Curtis Megginson, Jr., Concord, VA. The Dashazer family, Lynchburg, VA; and devoted partner and helpmate James Flowers of Stone Mountain, GA.

She also leaves to cherish her memory seven Godchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, friends and loved ones who will miss her dearly and always carry with them the love she gave, the faith she personified and the music she helped them share with the world.
Family night will be held Thursday, December 1st, 7:00pm – 8:00pm at Davis- Turner Funeral Home located at 1610 Rivermont Avenue Lynchburg, VA 24504. A Homegoing Service will be Friday, December 2nd, 2:00pm at Scott Zion Baptist Church located at 2602 Galts Mill Road Madison Heights, VA 24572.
