Obituary

Frances Engleton Brown, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, affectionally known as Ganny, was called to her eternal heavenly rest on Friday, June 2, 2017.  Frances was born October 28, 1941 to the late Charles H. Brown Sr. and Virginia T. Brown.   She is preceded in death by her parents and sister, Joan B. Reid.

Frances was educated in the Lynchburg, Virginia public school system and was a graduate of Dunbar High School's Class of 1960.  She married her high school sweetheart and from that union was born four children.

Accepting Christ at an early age, Frances was raised and baptized at Rivermont Baptist Church, where she worshipped until she moved to Roanoke, Virginia in 1968.  She was employed at         C & P Telephone Company as a Telephone Operator for over twenty-six years; retiring in 1993.  In 1994 she relocated to Lynchburg, where she reinstated her membership at Rivermont Baptist Church.   Upon her return to Rivermont she became involved in many church organizations serving on the Senior Usher Board and Choir, the Hospitality Committee, and volunteered as an arts and craft teacher for Vacation Bible School.   She also served in the community as a Voting Poll volunteer for local, state and national elections.  For the past three years, while in Roanoke, she was an active member of a Christian Women's Group, the F.R.O.G.S. (Fully Reigning Our God's Sovereignty).

Frances enjoyed many great pleasures in life. Spending quality time with family and friends was one of her greatest joys.  The one she was most known for was her "rotation" between the homes with her children and their families, which often included a well-deserved all paid vacation.  A lover of bells, she became an enthusiastic collector and many lavished her with a variety of unique keepsakes reflective of their bond or a memento from their national and international travels.  She thoroughly enjoyed crocheting; this labor of love resulted in each of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren being blessed with custom-made afghans in their favorite colors.  With the surge in technology, she found pleasure in playing Solitaire on the computer and in recent years Candy Crush on her personal tablet.

Those left to cherish her memory and carry on her legacy of God's love are her devoted children; James H. (Gail) Jones Jr., Shelly J. (Wilbur) Anderson, Mia S. (Johnathan) Beckett and Kimberly S. (Willie) Davis; grandchildren, James III, Jarod, Joshua, Shannon, Terrel, Devanee, Johnathan Jr., Brenden, Jeremy (Janelle), Christian and Jade; great-grandchildren, Markell, DeKayla, Makiyah, Jordan and Jadynn; a brother, Charles H. (Deborah) Brown Jr., a niece, nephews and a host of extended loved ones, childhood friends, church family and former co-workers who remained close until her death.
