Obituary

Eudora (Aka Dora) Sue Hamler-Hubbard passed quietly on the evening of February 7, 2017 at the residence of daughter Jean A Hubbard-Johnson. Dora was born on July 1, 1908 to John C. Hamler and Evaline Megginson Hamler. She was the fifth of six children born to this family. She was educated in Campbell County School System. She graduated from high school at Virginia Seminary. She joined in Matrimony to James E. Hubbard, Sr. in Lynchburg in 1931. The children were born to this. They were Gloria C. Hubbard-Lewis, of Orlando, Fl, Jean A Hubbard-Johnson, of Lynchburg and James E. Hubbard, Jr., of Midwest City, OK. She is survived by her grandchildren, Valerie D. Lewis-McGee, ESQ (Otis, ESQ) of California, Sybil Lewis-Gaines (Andre) of Orlando, FL, Maria A Johnson-Robinson, of Washington, DC, Kim Y. Hubbard-Hubbard-Hamilton and Randy E. Hubbard (Meranda) of Midwest City, OK; she is also survived by nine great-grandchildren, Aaron Wood, Brittany Hamlett, Brandon Hamlett and Brendan Hubbard. She is further survived by two great-great grandchildren, Brea Wise and Ava Lumpkin. She was pre-deceased by her husband, James E. Hubbard, Sr.; her parents, John C. and Evaline M. Hamler; siblings, Erma Hamler Ferguson, John E. Hamler, Jr., Julia Hamler-Cabell, Alverta Hamler-Otey and Henry A. Hamler. She was also pre-deceased by two grandchildren, Carroll E. Hubbard and Bonita Johnson. Dora grew up in Pleasant Valley with family. She was baptized in Pleasant Valley Baptist Church and spent her early years developing a love of God and expanding her Christian experience. She remained faithful to Pleasant Valley but she changed her membership of Diamond Hill Baptist Church in Lynchburg after her marriage. She raised her as members of Diamond Hill. She was an active part of the Diamond Hill Family and later became a deaconess. She served faithfully in that capacity and was subsequently honored as deaconess emeritus. She served until her health would not allow her to continue. Dora was very active and was a participating member of the Silver Wings Art Club (Pleasant Valley) and the Artistic Social Club (Lynchburg). She was active in the PTA during her children's school years. Her favorite pass-times were her church, travelling and dancing. She really enjoyed doing a little dance. She danced right up to the time that she became unable to walk. Dora became the primary bread winner for the family after her husband became disabled with crippling arthritis. She worked for a short while at the Lynchburg Hosiery Hill but later secured employment with the U.S. Postal Service where she worked unit her retirement in the mid-seventies. She became the primary care-giver to her husband several years prior to her retirement. She cared for him faithfully until his passing in January of 1972. After his death, she moved in and cared for her oldest sister, Irma, until she passed. She went to Flint, MI to stay with her daughter, Gloria until Gloria's health began to fail. She returned to Lynchburg to Stay with Her daughter, Jean until her passing. She leaves behind a special niece, Jacqueline C. Hamler-Taliaferro and nieces, nephews Henry A. Hamler (Cassandra), Ronald Hamer and Wanna Mae Hamler-Royal (Russell) along with other relatives and friends to honor a life well spent. To God be the glory. A funeral service will be held 1:00 PM Monday February 13, 2017 at Diamond Hill Baptist Church with the Pastor, Rev. Warren Anderson, officiating and Dr. Carl B. Hutcherson, as Eulogist.
