Elva Lee Watson Harvey, 86, passed away on February 25, 2013, at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was born in Lynchburg on December 23, 1926. She was the daughter of the late Pearl W. Wilson & the late Willie W. Brown. She was preceded in death by her husband, John P. Harvey, her son, Merrill Watson, and a great-granddaughter, Abigail Longenecker.
Elva joined Mt. Peeler Baptist Church at an early age and attended New Hope Baptist church until her health failed. She graduated from Campbell County Training School with honors and was a math "wiz." She worked at the laundry and was a homecare provider. She also cared for children inside her home. She loved the Lord and her family.
Elva widowed early and raised her six children by herself. She was often asked, "Elva how are you going to raised those children by yourself." Her response would be "I can show you better than I can tell you." She provided her family with a warm and loving home and made sure that the house she and John started building was completed after his death. She loved working in her yard and attending to her roses. She enjoyed family and friends gathering at her home on holidays and special occasions. She always made everyone feel welcomed and enjoyed a competitive game of horseshoes. Elva enjoyed talking with her cousin Lucille and other friends on the phone daily to catch up on the latest family events. During her quiet times she enjoyed playing Solitaire and spending time talking with the Lord.
She leaves to mourn a son, Preston Watson (Peggy), four daughters, Rachel Coles (Ronald), Ada Pinn (Allen), Johnnie Miller (Bobby), Bertha Brown (Thomas), all of Lynchburg, a daughter-in-law, Pearl Watson, Baltimore Maryland, two beloved cousins, Lucille Hubbard & Mary Nowlin, an aunt, Lucy Wooten, Glen White, West Virginia, two special nieces Arnethia and Brenda Murdock ,three loving and devoted caregivers, Everette Mickles, Gloria Davidson, and Constance Pettigrew, fourteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
The family would like to thank Dr. Richard Stowers and his staff, and the staff at Lynchburg General Hospital for their outstanding care, kindness & support during her illness.
A funeral will be held 11:00 Saturday, March 2, 2013 at 11:00 am at the New Hope Baptist Church, Concord with Rev. Rickey Ferguson, Pastor, officiating and Rev. Evelyn Mitchell as Eulogist. The interment will be in the Harvey and Martin Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives at Davis Turner Funeral home from 6:30 pm to 8 pm on Friday, March 1, 2013 and other times at the residence.
