Elizabeth Goldelia Gilbert Reese Elwin, formerly of Albany, New York, departed this life on Thursday, August 2, 2011 in the Lynchburg Health and Rehabilitation Center following an extended illness. She was born in Halifax County Virginia on October 12, 1923 to the late Percy Gilbert and Elsie Reid Gilbert. She was educated in the public schools in Brooklyn, New York.
Elizabeth was married to Charles Reese and from this union two children were born; Marian Reese Harris (deceased) and Edward Reese (Brooklyn, NY). Elizabeth received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Hunter College in Brooklyn, New York.In 1971, Elizabeth married the late Edwin Elwin of New York. They resided in Albany, New York and enjoyed a life of travel. She retired with a very distinguished career as a social worker and probation officer in New York. After her health began to decline Elizabeth moved to Lynchburg in 2007 and became a member of the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church.
In addition to her son, Elizabeth leaves to cherish her memory four sisters: Rev. Hester Easley (Evington, VA), Mary G. Holmes (Lynchburg, VA), Louise G. Arnold (Danville, VA), Rosa G. Cunningham (Altavista, Va), three brothers: Percy Gilbert (Denver, CO), Benjamin Gilbert (Gladys, VA), John Gilbert (Burlington, NC), and Rev. Major Gilbert (Gladys, VA), four sister-in-laws Mary Nelson Gilbert, Edith Gilbert, Ollie Gilbert, and Brenda Gilbert; a very devoted friend Mary Jo Cosco (Albany, NY); and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
