Obituary

Doris Yvonne Rucker Calloway departed this life on Monday, May 26, 2025, at Virginia Baptist Hospital. She was born on September 27, 1936, to the late Aaron Rucker and Edith Virginia Monroe Rucker.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel James Calloway, Jr.

Doris became a member of the Chapel Grove Baptist Church in Evington, but later changed her membership to Shiloh to serve and worship with her husband. At Shiloh, she was a member of the Mass Choir and Senior Choir. She was an Usher and always greeted everyone with a smile. She was also on the Kitchen Committee, where she fed people from her heart with a smile.

She loved attending Sunday School and reading the Bible daily. She also loved Word Search Puzzles. She loved to cook, especially pound cakes and banana pudding, and wanted the family to sit down and eat a meal every Sunday. She also loved to cook for the holidays and have the whole family over.

But let's not forget about her "passion" for shopping. Mom, Jessica, Nick, and Gloria would go shopping almost every weekend, mostly looking. Mom would always buy shoes; she loved her shoes, and the shoes would have to match each outfit she would wear. After shopping, we would go to Arby's to get a Beef 'N Cheddar sandwich, with curly fries.

She was a loving person. She loved God, her family, her Pastor, and her Church family.

Doris is survived by brothers, Aaron Rucker (Mary Jones Rucker), and Lonnie Dabney; a daughter, Gloria Ferguson; a son, Daniel Calloway, Jr.; a son-in-law, Sylvester Ferguson, Jr.; and a daughter-in-law, Cynthia Calloway.

Doris has four grandchildren: Danielle Abu-Shamsiyh (Sharif), Jessica Ferguson, James Alexander Calloway (Nemi), and Nicholas Ferguson (Tonya). Her seven great-grandchildren: Tiyanna Haynes, Amari Walkes, James Norman Calloway, Nola Ferguson, Sharif Abu-Shamsiyh, Jr., Ava Ferguson, and Gabrielle Abu-Shamsiyh. Doris is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Doris, Mom, Granny, will be missed!

A homegoing celebration will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at Shiloh Baptist Church. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Service of comfort rendered by Davis-Turner Funeral Service.
