And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth. Genesis 9:16
Delnora Herndon Johnson passed away on Monday, April 15, 2024, at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, Virginia with family members by her side.
She was born on September 17, 1955, to the late Vance and Armelia Herndon. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Aubrey, James, Carlton, Carroll, and Kenneth.
Delnora joined Cross Road Baptist Church as a child and remained a member her entire life. She was an usher, attended Sunday School, Bible School, and worship service. She also attended Pleasant Valley Baptist Church with her husband and developed a spiritual bond with the clergy and members.
Delnora graduated from Rustburg High School and made life-long friends. She also met her husband, Thomas, and they were together from the ninth grade until her death.
Delnora was diagnosed with a kidney disease as a child which led to her having two kidney transplants. Kenneth, her brother, donated the first kidney which functioned for 38 years. The doctors thought she would not be able to have children, but she proved them wrong. She had a second kidney transplant five years ago. She also had multiple hip replacements.
In spite of all her health issues, she was able to lead a normal life.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was a teacher's aide at Tomahawk Elementary School and Mary Bethune Nursery. She was a cashier at K-mart and worked as a health assistant at Generation Solutions. Her last job was as a private caretaker.
Delnora loved gospel music and listened to it religiously. Fletcher Hubbard was her favorite network. She traveled to hear quartets and other gospel performers and had a personal collection of Pastor Coleman's sermons which she played repeatedly. Thanks to the internet she was able to listen to services when she was unable to attend church.
Delnora loved people and leaves to cherish her memory her husband, of 46 years, William Thomas Johnson, III; their son, William "Tee" Johnson, IV and his daughter, Emma Joy Johnson. Delnora loved her granddaughter and referred to her as Grandma's Joy. She also leaves her siblings, Norman, Calvin (Gloria), Jane James (Frank), Pat Gray (Larry), and Allie Herndon; sisters-in-law, Elaine Herndon, Rhodie Herndon, and Djuna Johnson; one uncle-in-law, Michael Hubbard; and an aunt-in-law, Donna Carter. She also leaves a host of devoted cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great-great nieces, and a great-great nephew.
A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 20, 2024, at Cross Road Baptist Church. The family will be receiving family and friends from 5:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. at Davis-Turner Funeral Service. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
