Obituary

Maryland J. Johnson, age 103 of Madison Heights, went to be with the Lord at his home on Tuesday, April 23, 2013. He was on January 1, 1910, the son of the late Joseph Johnson and Georgia Miller Johnson Moorman.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Missionary Virginia L. Graves Johnson; one son, James Johnson; three daughters, Mary Ann Johnson, Joyce Johnson Baker, Esther Mae Johnson; two step children, Lawrence and Ida Mae Graves; one brother, Raymond Johnson; one sister, Lula Johnson Morgan.
He was a very long time member of Christ Temple Apostolic Church, where he served as a deacon for over 65 years. He served on the Usher board, Senior Choir, Trustee Board, Sunday School Teacher and Sunday School Superintendent. He was baptized in the Name of Jesus over 70 years ago at Christ Temple Apostolic.
When he became unable to stay by himself, he came to live with his daughter in Madison Heights where he became a watch care member of Promise Land Ministries, Lynchburg until his death.
He retired from the Norfolk and Western Railroad and being a chauffeur to Richard Carrington for over 25 years. He also worked at the Gale Morgan Foundry for many years.
He is survived by five daughters, Helen Johnson McPherson Pryor, of Lynchburg, Violet Johnson Payne, of Greenville, NC, Ruth Johnson Trimier-Jones, of San Angelo Texas, Christine Johnson Lewis Witcher, (Elder Sandy), of Madison Heights and Gloria J. Johnson-Hunter, of Lynchburg; three sons, Holice D. Johnson (Barbara) Massapequa, NY, District/Elder Donald Johnson, of Madison Heights and Vincent B. Johnson, of Akron, OH, and a host of nephews, cousins, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. We like to thank Elder Sandy Witcher for the great care he gave him during his years with them.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 Noon Saturday, April 27, 2013 at New Dearington Baptist Church. The interment will be in the Forest Hill Burial Park. He will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service. The family will receive friends at the home of Elder Sandy & Christine Witcher 1585 Dixie Airport Road, Madison Heights.
