Obituary

On Wednesday, January 25, 2017, God chose to call one of his faithful servants home. Louis Ivanor Pettigrew, Jr was born April 3, 1948 in Lynchburg, Virginia.
He was the first of nine sons born to Louis Ivanor Pettigrew, Sr. and Geraldine Gaines Pettigrew. He was preceded in death by his father and three brothers: Clinton, Antoine and Chester Pettigrew. He is survived by his brothers Bobby (Connie) of Texas, Kenneth (Connie) of Virginia, Danny (Barbara) of North Carolina, Kirk (Diana) of Connecticut and Avon Pettigrew; Father-in-law Jesse Lewis, Sr., sister-in-law, Dorrie (Tommy) Jackson, brother-in-law Jesse Lewis all of Texas; and four aunts, Helen Govan of Concord, Phyllis Greene of Maryland, Maxine Calloway of Maryland, and Dinah-Marie Alexander of Rustburg; and sister-in-law's Peggy, Jacquetta, Sandy, and Betty.
He was married to his loving and devoted wife Shirley Lewis Pettigrew for 43 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by five children, Tammy (Edward) Farmer of Richmond, Juan Pettigrew of Lynchburg, Lisa (Quentin) Parker of Richmond, Louis D. Pettigrew of Delaware, and Latrice Pettigrew of Colorado; seven grandchildren, Mark, Juan Jr., Charles, Kiara, Marcus, Christian, Quentin, and Scotlyn; and ten great-grandchildren.
Louis was uncle to: Jerrod, Christy, Stacey, Kenneth Jr., Gary, Mike, Jeff, Danneta, Kisha, Vanessa, Danny Jr., Jacquetta, Jasper, Jamal, Clinton Jr., Brian, Deona, Adrienne, Antoine Jr., Channa, Michael and Lori.
Louis graduated from Campbell County High School in 1966 and attended Hampton University before enlisting in the United States Army. He was an aviator who served as a Medivac helicopter pilot in the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Lt. Colonel after 20 years of service. He retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation after 25 years of service.
Louis was a true servant of God. As a member of the Mount Peeler Baptist church he actively served as a Deacon, Sunday school and Bible Study teacher, and sang on the Men's Chorus.
He faithfully served his community as a member of the Concord Volunteer Rescue Squad for 28 years where he was a well-respected member.
He was a loving son, husband and father, and leaves to cherish his memory a community of neighbors, relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Monday, January 30, 2017 at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, 5517 Pleasant Valley Rd, Lynchburg, VA with Pastor, Rev. Carlton Jackson, officiating and Rev. Calvin Coles, as eulogist. Interment will be in the Archer Creek Cemetery. Military Rites will be given by U.S. Army Fort Lee, Fort Lee, Virginia. Family and friends may view on Sunday from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM. In lieu of flowers please make donations in memory of Louis I. Pettigrew, Jr. to the Concord Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O.
