Deacon Massie Coles, 93, of Amherst, VA, passed away on January 9, 2012 at Fairmont Nursing Home, Amherst, VA. He was born on March 24, 1918 to the late Duper and Fannie Martin Coles Jones. He was the husband of the late Margaret Taylor Coles and father of the late Peggy Weston.
Massie was a beautiful and humble man that touched the hearts of everyone he came in contact with. Massie served his country in the US Army during World War II. Massie retired from Amherst County School System, as a Mail Carrier after many years. Upon retirement, he and his wife were able to dedicate their time to their true passion of farming and gardening full time. "Everyone in Amherst knew where to come to get some good homemade butter, buttermilk, cakes and pies." He became a member of New Jerusalem Baptist Church, at an early age and continued to faithfully serve as a Deacon until his health began to fail. He was the husband of the late Margaret Taylor Coles and father of the late Peggy Weston. Massie was the brother of the late Pierce Coles and Dorothy Coles Smith (Kemper Smith).
He leaves to cherish his memories one son, Elburn Christian, Washington, DC; eight grandson; three nephews, Kemper Smith, Jr., Washington, DC, Satchel Smith of Amherst, VA and Brandy (Shelly) Smith, Jr; two nieces, Marquita Smith of Amherst, VA and Ria Smith of Washington, DC; devoted brother-in-law and two sister-in-laws, Percy (Kathleen) Taylor, Christine Smith and Mildred Carter all of Amherst, VA; two devoted cousins, Connie M. Rose and James (Rev. Pearlie) Sandidge, Amherst, VA; three devoted friends Carrie Braxton, Madison Heights, VA, Helen Gibson, and JB Richardson both of Washington, DC; and a host of loving cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
