Obituary

On the eve of October 2, 2021, about a quarter past eight, God dispatched angels of mercy, eased Curtis' pain and moved him from his physical home to his eternal home.

Curtis was a lifetime member of the Piney Grove Baptist Church, where he served as Co-Chairman of the Trustees, sang on the Gospel Chorus and was active in the Men's Ministry until his health failed. His love of hunting led him to join the Browntown Hunting Club, where he served as Vice President at one point. In his pastime, Curtis loved to fish, farm and to cultivate various gardens.  He was quick to show and tell the younger generation the process of completing them successfully. Later in life, as a young man he joined the Robert F. Braxton Masonic Hall where he was active for many years.  After retirement, he periodically volunteered to work the Election polls in Amherst County.

Blessed with a sense of quick wit and sharp memory skills, Curtis learned early in life that hard work paid off. He diligently worked to sharpen his skills and talents, which enabled him to learn carpentry. He later used these skills to remodel his home. Aside from renovating his home, cutting pulp wood, raising cattle, Curtis supported his family as a lift truck operator at Lynchburg Foundry where he later retired after working 44 ½ years of service.

Curtis Allen "Red" Johnson was born September 10, 1945 and was the youngest son of the late Junior Johnson and Doretha Simpson. In addition to his parents, he was proceeded in death by his two sisters Barbara Leftwich and Mary Hughes; two brothers William Johnson and Lawrence Johnson.

He is survived by a devoted and loving wife of 55 years, Mattilean "Cooley" Johnson; son Jeffrey "Jay"(Candilla) Johnson Owings Mills, MD; daughter Deborah "Peaches" (Stephen) O'Bannon of Amherst, VA; Four grandchildren; Zarriah O'Bannon, Eron Small, Shanece O'Bannon, Jessica Williams, a sister Catherine L.
