I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. 2Timothy 4:7-8
Charles Edward Jones departed this earthly life on Sunday, January 14, 2024. He was born in Monroe, Virginia (Tobacco Row Mountain) on April 22, 1938, to Dock Jordan, Jr. "Papa" and Onie Pearl Jones. Charles joined the First Baptist Church Coolwell at an early age, where he was a faithful lifelong member. It was there Charles developed his love for Christ and accepted his call to discipleship. He was committed to God, family, church, and friends. Charles served as Chairman of the Trustee Board, Member of the Usher Ministry, Brotherhood Ministry President, and a member of the Male Chorus and the Combined Choir. Charles was often seen throughout the church assisting where needed and sometimes giving a hand in the kitchen and he was often the last person to leave the church.
Charles, affectionately known as "Gravy" to some, "Buck" to others, "Boo" to his loving wife, and "Dad" to his three daughters, was a class act and honestly an officer and a gentleman. He was an exceptional law enforcement officer with the City of Lynchburg Police Department for over twenty years. He received many awards and honors, including the Law Enforcement Purple Heart for wounds he sustained in the line of duty. Charles retired as a Captain on July 1, 1990. Upon retirement, Charles transitioned his part-time business, CJ Hauling, to full-time. His entrepreneurial spirit carried him throughout the Lynchburg area, contracting with numerous companies to remove cardboard, metals, and other materials.
Charles was a devoted member of the Masonic Lodge for over 40 years. He served in numerous capacities, including the Worship Master of Robert F. Braxton Masonic Lodge #318 (Madison Heights, VA) and the past District Deputy of the 23rd Masonic District of Virginia (Prince Hall). Charles was bestowed the highest level, 33rd Degree, as a Master Mason.
Charles was a champion outdoorsman. He was an avid fisherman and launched his boat several times a year. He enjoyed hunting and was a member of the Buckingham Tri-County Hunt Club. Charles took pride in his hunting dogs and the spoils of a good day's hunt. However, none of Charles' outdoor sports stopped him from enjoying the finer things in life.
Along with his parents, Charles was also preceded in death by his siblings: Squire Jordan, Richard Jordan, Eva Jordan, Thelma Jordan Brown, Ezra Jordan, James Jordan, and William Bolling.
Left to cherish his memories are his devoted wife, Rhonda Sutphin Jones; three daughters, Kimberly Jones Lytle of Upper Marlboro, MD, Tamika Jones of Alexandria, VA, and Shantee Jones of Forest, VA; two grandsons, Bryan Jones (Devona) and Michael Preston, II; four great-grandchildren, Camren, Kennedy, Brooklyn, and Braelynn; three sisters-in-law, Carstoba Byrdsong (Tom), Ann Morgan, and Gail Goode (Gerald) all of Raleigh, NC; two brothers-in-law, William Sutphin, III (Cassie) of Las Vegas, NV and Randy Sutphin (Cordelia) of Raleigh, NC. Others left to cherish his memories include a multitude of cousins, nieces, nephews, and a host of other loving relatives, friends, and his devoted caregivers: Shantee Jones (loving daughter), Arbutus Traynham (cousin), Patricia Rucker (cousin), Teresa Canada, and Reverend Maxwell Gafford.
The long journey of this life is over.
Victory in Christ has been won.
We claim the blessed hope, that to those who die in "Christ,"
death is only asleep. So again, we say, "Good night, Charles."
We will see you in the morning.
