Alma T. Irvine, daughter of the late Mr. Eugene D. Irvine and the late Mrs. Edith Stone Irvine, passed away on January 21, 2026.

She received her education in the public schools of Lynchburg and pursued higher education at Virginia State College (now Virginia State University) in Petersburg; North Carolina State College in Durham; Howard University in Washington, D.C.; Columbia University in New York City; and Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York.

During her professional career, Ms. Irvine taught French, English, and Social Studies at the high school level in Fayetteville, North Carolina. She later served as a fifth, sixth, and seventh-grade teacher in the Lynchburg Public School System, from which she retired as a reading specialist. In addition, she taught The Teaching of Reading and conducted reading workshops for the Virginia State College Division of Field Services.

Ms. Irvine’s published writings included articles in a variety of educational and recreational magazines.

Throughout her life, she deeply valued the abiding concern and companionship of her family and friends, including former students near and far, Sorors, and members of Diamon Hill Baptist Church.

She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., a life member of Pi Lambda Theta, a national honor society for educators, and a life member of the NAACP.

She is survived by her niece, Jean I. Holmes, her grandnephew, Raynah H. Adams, IV and his wife, Pamela.
