Addison "Fuz" Wood
Addison Saunders Wood, 91, better known by his family and friends as Fuz, departed this life on Saturday, March 24, 2007. He was born on March 9, 1916, in Campbell County, VA. His parents were the late Albert J. Wood, Sr. and Annie Dixon Wood. He was one of twelve children.
He attended public school in Campbell County, VA. He accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized into the fellowship of Mt. Peeler Baptist Church, where he remained a member until his death. In his later years, when his health began to fail, he enjoyed going with his wife, Vergie, to St. James CME Church.
Addison was in the U.S. Army, serving in World War II, and was honorably discharged. He was proud to be a life member of the Disabled American Veterans (D.A.V.). Fuz was known for helping others and was called upon by many to do all kinds of construction work. His work is a part of many buildings, including Moores Store, Mt. Peeler Baptist Church and many homes and buildings across the area .
Addison was a faithful member of the Otter River Baptist Sunday School Convention and the Central Baptist Sunday School Union, where he served as President of both organizations. He loved Sunday School and for countless years, he was a Field Worker of the Sunday School Union, visiting churches all over the region. Fuz also loved serving as a delegate for the Baptist Training Union Convention each year.
Addison was dedicated to visiting the sick at nursing homes and hospitals. He felt those visits were an important part of true mission work. He was always concerned about whether the sick and shut-in felt lonely, so he wanted to spread encouragement and cheer.
Addison was a poet and was known for sharing his many long poems, he knew from memory. He wrote hundreds of poems and, in 1987, he published a book of his poems entitled, Life's Journey Shared Through Poetry. We will continue to enjoy his work and cherish his book of poems forever.
Addison was preceded in death by: five brothers, Carroll, Albert, Jr., Theodore, Vorden, and Paige; and five sisters, Lenora Patrick, Georgia Loving, Magdalean Pilgrim, Edna Martin, and Mary Wood.
Our beloved Addison (Fuz) leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 61 years, Vergie Campbell Wood; two daughters, Loleta Foster ( Benjamin), and Wynella Myers; three sons, George Napier (Susie), Addison "Lad" Wood, and Vorden "Chap" Wood ( Barbara). Addison spent his last two years of life as a resident in The Summit Health and Rehabilitation Center, Lynchburg, VA. The family is forever grateful to the wonderful staff and professionals there, who provided excellent care, encouragement, and hugs. The entire family is also thankful for the awesome care our brother, George, gave our father over the entire two years he was at The Summit. George was there just about every day for two years and one month – what a gift you have been to daddy and all of us! Addison was known for saying "Thank you for everything!", so we will end by saying to him, "Thank YOU for EVERYTHING!"
