Obituary

With deep sorrow, we announce the peaceful transition of Ada LaVern Smith on the morning of March 10, 2025, at the age of 79. Born on April 18, 1945, in Amherst County, Virginia. Ada was the beloved daughter of the late Thomas and Lillian Smith. Around the age of 10, her family relocated to Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York where she was raised.

Ada went to Eastern District High School and pursued higher education at the City University of New York and Baruch College of the City University of New York., where she studied Marketing and Management earning a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in 1973 and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in 1975. She later embarked on a distinguished career in public service, entering politics as a Democrat. From 1986 to 1988, she served as Deputy City Clerk of New York City, and in 1988, she was elected to the New York State Senate, where she served until her retirement in 2006.

Throughout her tenure, Ada was a dedicated advocate for her community, particularly focusing on seniors and youth. From 1994 to 2002, she served as Senate Minority Whip, and from 2002 to 2004, she was the Chairwoman of the Senate Democratic Conference. She was also the ranking minority member of the Senate's Corporations, Authorities, and Commissions Committee, securing crucial funding for her district and ensuring that seniors received the care and resources they deserved, including an annual all-expense-paid retreat.
